I CARE Story - Burger and a Beer
A simple meal for a special Veteran: Burger and a Beer
John Young Junior was known as a man who dedicated his life to public service.
The Hawley, Minnesota, native was honored at the city’s annual rodeo fest June 11 and 12 for his many years of community involvement. He was a founding member of the Hawley Jaycees and Lions Club as well as an active member of the annual rodeo committee. Young was the Mayor of Hawley from 1994 to 1996. He served in the United States Army from 1958 to 1960.
As a Veteran on the Community Living Center and under the care of the Hospice Team, Mr. Young’s last wish was to have a “burger and an ice-cold beer” at the American Legion in Moorhead. The Wishes on Wings program arranged and granted this last wish. The recreational therapist drove and the Hospice nurse accompanied John to provide nursing care for the duration of the trip. Many of his family members were able to join him, including children, grandchildren and siblings.
John Young Junior died later that same day, Tuesday, June 7. He was 80 years old.
