Fargo VA Health Care System
I CARE Story - Respect and Listening
When Dennis White started receiving care from the Fargo VA Health Care System for shoulder pain, he found the care he received was different than the care he was used to in the private sector.
“Before I came to the Fargo VA, the treatment I was getting for my shoulder was not being conducted with very much respect,” said Dennis, a retired banker with more than 40 years in the business under his belt. “But when I came on at the VA, my orthopedist, Dr. Charles Hartz, and his team explained all the processes, respected my input, and just listened to me, which allowed me to know I was one-hundred percent a part of the treatment process.”
But it wasn’t only the respect that Dennis received that helped in his treatment. He said the encouragement of the people treating him at the VA was just what he needed.
“I work out a lot,” Dennis said. “I was encouraged to stay active, and they gave me great advice that allowed me to get back in the gym which in turn kick-started my healing process. When I worked out recently, the workout was almost pain free.”
Dennis said the healthcare providers he saw previously treated him like he was naïve, because he’s older and retired, and they viewed him as lacking the physical ability or desire to do what needed to be done to get better.
“But with Dr. Hartz, I knew that when he was treating me, he was giving me his undivided attention and respect, like I was his only patient. The treatment was priceless.”
