I CARE Story - Anniversary

Veteran Lyle Sustad and his wife Karen

Veteran Lyle Sustad and his wife Karen at their 45th wedding anniversary party. Cathy Bauer-Kottenbrock, Social Worker with Hospice Palliative Care Services, and Amanda Mosbrucker, Social Worker with the Spinal Cord Clinic, served as the hosts.

Thursday, April 28, 2016

Lyle, a 68-year-old Veteran who was diagnosed with ALS and was receiving hospice care on the CLC, had a 45th wedding anniversary celebration like no other.  The Wishes on Wings program (WOW) provided the support to have food, flowers, and decorations, which made for a festive and memorable occasion.  The auditorium, where the event was held, was decorated in Lyle and Karen’s wedding colors of white, yellow, and turquoise with yellow and white roses adorning the tables.

On April 3rd, Lyle’s daughter was the first to arrive and as she entered the auditorium she started crying as she was overcome by the room and the details it had captured of her parents wedding including pictures and guest book. Lyle’s son from California was also there to surprise Lyle.

The grandchildren provided the music. A 7-year-old played piano while a 5-year-old sang “You Are My Sunshine.”  One granddaughter played, on the violin, Lyle and Karen’s original wedding march and two granddaughters sang “On Angels Wings.”  It was a day Lyle and Karen will never forget.

The final count of family and guests attending the celebration was 225.

Lyle passed away four days after this event.

Wishes on Wings making last wish memories!!
