There will be a Veterans Healthy Living Fair at the Fargo VA on March 9 from 9am-3pm.  The event will take place in the third floor auditorium and it is open to all Veterans who want to learn more about managing their health.

The first 50 Veterans to attend will receive a reusable lunch bag filled with health goodies.  In addition, there will be drawings throughout the day for fun giveaways.

"This event is an opportunity for Veterans to get the resources they need in order to make positive health behavior changes," said Heidi Zwetzig, health promotions disease prevention manager and one of the event organizers at the Fargo VA.

"Our goal is not only to help Veterans learn more about a health topic that they're interested in, but it is also a way for us to help them on their journey to make positive lifestyle changes."

The fair is focused on the nine core healthy living messages that the VA is promoting to help Veterans achieve a healthier lifestyle.  These messages are:

  • Be involved with your health care
  • Be physically active
  • Eat wisely
  • Strive for a healthy weight
  • Manage stress
  • Be safe
  • Be tobacco free
  • Limit alcohol
  • Get recommended screening tests and immunizations

Information booths will be set up at the event focused on the healthy living messages.  In addition, other topics will be available such as online resources, like My HealtheVet, where Veterans can refill their prescriptions, look at appointments and lab results and secure message with their provider from their home computer.

Presentations will also be conducted throughout the day to include a Health Cooking Demonstration from 10-10:30am and 2-2:30pm, an Exercise and Fall Prevention Presentation from 11-11:30am and a My HealtheVet Website Demonstration from 2-2:30pm.

"Making a small change in health behaviors can have a huge impact on your health, hopefully this event will help initiate that," said Zwetzig.
