Visiting Policy

Although VAMC Fargo does not have specific visiting hours, visiting times are based on the needs of the patient.  Visitors are encouraged to discuss any special visiting needs with the unit's head nurse. Whenever possible and medically appropriate, the nurse will coordinate special visiting arrangements to meet patient and family needs.

If you are unable to visit a patient personally, you may call the patient or send a card or gift.

Privacy and Confidentiality Guidelines

Visitors who request location and information about patients will be handled in accordance with proper privacy and confidentiality guidelines.  As part of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) no information is provided to family, clergy or with gift delivery if a patient has chosen not to be part of the directory listing.

Number of Visitors

There is no limit to the number of visitors a patient can receive.

Children Under 12 Years of Age

Children under 12 may visit patients. However, children should be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Intensive Care Unit

Visits to the Intensive Care Unit should be limited to 10 minutes every hour.

All patients have the right to pastoral care.  This may be provided by the Chaplain Service or by the patients' own clergyperson.  Individual non-VA clergy are welcome to visit patients who are members of their parishes or congregations.  Only VA Chaplains will be permitted to do general or random visitation of patients or distribution of religious literature.
